A performance car Enduro Challenge, first drives of the Porsche Carrera GT & Ferrari Challenge Stradale, a supercar super test and a circuit vs rally driver showdown with WRC star Gilles Panizzi - all in Best Motoring 13: Enduro Challenge! ENDURO CHALLENGE Formerly an annual Best Motoring event, it's been a few years since the BMI team staged an Enduro Challenge. Designed to test not only the speed but also the durability under sustained racing conditions of some of the most popular and aspirational performance cars, the Enduro Challenge pits the factory-spec machines against each other in 2 x 20 minute track battles. While the object is to win the race, each driver must do so within the car's limitations. A variety of oil & engine temperature limits are imposed, with sensors fitted to a blue strobe light. If those limits are reached, the light starts and the driver has to back off until the temperatures reach safe levels. So there's no 'race-it-till-you-break-it' attitude in a bid to win at all costs. Brake wear, fuel economy and other consumable items are also evaluated to find an overall performance car winner. It's a unique and highly sought-after prize to be Enduro Challenge champion manufacturer. The challengers this year are: Mitsubishi Evolution VIII MR RS, Subaru WRX STi Spec C, Honda NSX-R, BMW M3 CSL in the 280hp+ category. In the under 250hp class the Honda S2000, Mazda RX-8 Type S & Integra Type R were the contenders. The Challenge is set on a 30C+ degree day, and cabin temperatures were as high as 60C degrees, making it a challenge for the drivers as well as the cars. FIRST DRIVE: PORSCHE CARRERA GT The legendary Gan-san (Motoharu Kurosawa) takes the incredible new Porsche Carrera GT for blast around the 5.8km Suzuka Grand Prix circuit in its first video evaluation. Anyone who's seen Gan-san drive in previous Best Motoring battles knows that he doesn't spare the machinery! CIRCUIT VS RALLY TIME ATTACK SHOWDOWN (with WRC driver Gilles Panizzi) While not as vicious as the Hatfields & McCoys, the rivalry between circuit and rally racers can be fierce. So when the circuit boys, led by Japanese Racing Champ Takayuki Kinoshita challenged All Japan Rally Champion Fumio Nutahara to a short-course circuit Time Attack in a Mitsubishi Evo MR, Nutahara decided he needed some help. He invited tarmac rally specialist and Mitsubishi WRC driver Gilles Panizzi to help uphold the rally profession's honour. So the battle is set, an Evolution MR, on a tight, 40-second tarmac circuit not much bigger than a go-kart track, Nutahara & Panizzi vs Kinoshita and Shinichi Katsura. Fastest time wins! FERRARI CHALLENGE STRADALE SUPER TEST! The most evocative name and sound in motoring has a new model out, the Ferrari Challenge Stradale! After ex-Indy racer Naoki Hattori takes it to the Twin Ring Motegi track for a thorough evaluation, it's put up against its opposition. The Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911 GT3 Club Sport, BMW M3 CSL, Honda NSX-R and Ferrari Modena F1 all line up to challenge the newcomer to the supercar ranks. Using the Japanese Automobile Research Institute (JARI) banked high-speed course, the cars are compared in quarter-mile, 0-1000m and maximum speed tests to see how the Stradale stacks up. At speeds of more than 250km/h, it's the fastest car comparo you'll see anywhere. Plus, the sound of a Ferrari at full song - does it get any better! BONUS CHAPTER: SUBARU RALLY MEET Featuring WRC drivers Petter Solberg and Mikka Hirvonen. Solberg puts on a display of car-park rallying in his WRC Impreza, through the witches hats, complete with astonishing in-car footage that will blow your mind. The 2003 World Champion also offers rallying tips for the up-and-comers, or just plain wannabes.
