Honda's hot Civic Type R goes under the microscope in Best Motoring International 21. In its hard-core 166kW Japanese specification, the latest Civic Type R sedan shows some hefty credentials as it's put up against some of Japan's respected and traditional performance cars. The Civic Type R is first put in a five-lap battle against fellow Hondas, including the DC2 Integra Type R, DC5 Integra Type R, Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z Version S, and even Honda's own supercar, the NSX in both Type S and R versions. The battle against the NSX shows how much the latest Civic Type R has improved! Then it's on to the Touge GP300 battle, where cars from five Japanese tuning shops take on the 1.5km winding road. Mildly tuned and limited to 300hp, Spoon's 2.0-litre EK9 Civic battles Drivin' Magic's DC5 Integra Type R, Yashio Factory's 350Z and a pair of Honda S2000s tuned by Amuse with a 2.3-litre engine, and J's Racing which retains the Japanese 2.2-litre engine but uses suspension tuning for speed. A grip battle and drift-off between USA and Japan sees drift king Keiichi Tsuchiya and Yasuyuki Kazama take on America's Tanner Foust and Ken Gushi. Each team is given a chance in their hometown cars, featuring a traditional Japanese tuned AE86 Corolla and the latest Ford Shelby GT500 supercharged Mustang. At Willow Springs, the Americans have a home-track advantage, but it's a tough battle against the drivers from the home of drifting. And finally, Ferrari's 599 features as BMI takes a look at the Enzo-powered FR machine, its ride, performance and handling on the streets and winding mountain roads. Lamborghini's Gallardo is brought along for an interesting comparison. Vol 21 features 95 minutes of all the commentary, on-board footage, tuning, driving and racing that makes Best Motoring so popular.
